PDF tools guide: merge, split, compress and convert PDFs

AltFTool's PDF tools let you merge, split, reorder, compress and convert PDFs for free in your browser. Use PDF Merger to combine files, PDF Split to break one apart, PDF Compressor to shrink it, and PDF to JPG or PDF to Word to convert it; none of these upload your document.

Which PDF tool do you need?

All PDF tools are listed under PDF & Documents and collected in the AltFLovePDF hub. These are the ones most people need:

How to merge PDFs

  1. Open PDF Merger

    Go to /tools/all/pdf-merger.

  2. Add your files

Drop up to 20 PDFs, each up to 80 MB. The page count of each file appears as it loads, along with the combined total.

  3. Set the order

Use Move Up and Move Down, or Reverse, to put the files in the right sequence. Pages are copied file by file from top to bottom.

  4. Name and merge

Type a name in the Combined File Name box and merge. The result downloads straight to your device.

Splitting, compressing and converting

PDF Split shows a file-by-file plan before it does anything. You can split every page, split into fixed batches, define custom page groups, or extract or remove specific pages, and download the output as separate PDFs or one ZIP.

PDF Compressor re-renders each page and re-encodes it as a JPEG at Low, Balanced or High quality, then rebuilds the PDF. It handles files up to 100 MB and shows the before and after size. Because pages become images, text in the compressed copy is no longer selectable, so keep your original if you need to search or copy from it.

PDF to JPG renders pages with PDF.js at 72 to 300 DPI and saves them as JPG, PNG or WebP; pick the pages you want from thumbnails. PDF to Word works on text-based PDFs and rebuilds paragraphs and headings into an editable .docx. Scanned PDFs are images of text and need OCR, which these tools do not perform.

Your documents stay on your device

The merge, split, compress and convert tools above read your file in the page and build the result in your browser, so contracts, invoices and ID scans are not sent to a server. The document is handed back as a normal download. See privacy and local processing for how to verify this for any tool.

Frequently asked questions

How many PDFs can I merge at once?

PDF Merger accepts up to 20 files per batch, each up to 80 MB. For more, merge in batches and then merge the results.

Why is my compressed PDF not searchable?

PDF Compressor saves each page as an image to reduce size, so the text layer is lost. Keep the original when you need selectable text.

Can I convert a scanned PDF to Word?

Not accurately. PDF to Word reads the text layer of a PDF; a scan has no text layer. You need an OCR tool to recognise the text first.

Are my PDFs uploaded?

No. These PDF tools process files in your browser tab and hand the result back as a local download.
