A step counter — a pedometer — counts your steps by measuring the small, repeating acceleration your body produces each time a foot lands. This one does that in your phone's browser: it reads the built-in accelerometer through the browser's motion API, so there is no app to install and no account to create. The detection runs the same pipeline a dedicated pedometer uses — gravity is filtered out of the raw reading, the signal is smoothed, peaks are found with hysteresis, and a walking-cadence gate holds the first steps back until four of them arrive in rhythm. A tap, a single bump, or a phone picked up off a table therefore counts as zero rather than inflating your total. Because that means a real walk shows nothing for its first few steps, a strip under the count says which is happening — reading the sensor, waiting for movement, locking on to your rhythm, or counting at so many steps a minute. The accelerometer only exists on a phone or tablet, so a laptop counts nothing at all and offers a QR code to open the page on your phone instead. Every step, goal and daily total is written to your browser's local storage on that device — there is no account and no upload, and you can download the whole history as a CSV whenever you want it.

No. Step detection needs a physical motion sensor, and desktops and laptops don't have one. The session will still run and time your activity, but the step count stays at zero instead of faking a number. On a computer the page shows a QR code and a copy-link button so you can move it to a phone or tablet in one step; your goal and your history stay in whichever browser recorded them.
Yes — the detector is tuned for a phone held in your hand or carried in a pocket at a normal walking cadence. What it deliberately ignores is anything that isn't rhythmic: a phone lying on a desk, a tap, a jolt, or being picked up all register as zero steps.
No. Browsers stop delivering motion events once the phone sleeps or you switch away to another app, so counting pauses until you come back to the page. For a full walk, keep the screen awake with the page open. Whatever was counted before the screen slept is already saved.
It uses the technique dedicated pedometers use: gravity-compensated acceleration, smoothing, and hysteresis peak detection behind a walking-cadence gate. Nothing is counted until four peaks arrive in a valid rhythm, which is why the first steps of a walk appear together in a small burst and why a couple of steps across a room may not register at all. Accuracy is best over a steady walk with the phone in hand or in a pocket.
It can, and it is worth knowing before you trust a total. The detector accepts any steady, footstep-like rhythm, and measured against the two statistics it uses — how even the gaps between peaks are, and how sharply each peak stands out — a smooth vehicle vibration and a normal walk are almost identical. Nothing in an accelerometer alone can separate them, so pause the session when you get in and resume when you get out.
Only to open the page. The counting itself makes no network calls at all — detection runs inside your browser and your steps go straight to that browser's local storage — so a tunnel, a dead spot or airplane mode part-way through a walk does not interrupt the count. It is not an offline app, though: once the tab is closed you need a connection to load the page again.
Both are estimates, and both are marked as such on screen. Distance uses your step length: 0.415 x your height if you enter it, otherwise a 0.75 m population average. Calories scale with your body weight at roughly 0.0006 kcal per step per kilogram, defaulting to 70 kg until you say otherwise. There is no floors figure — that needs a barometer, which a browser cannot read.

Your steps, goal, streak and milestones are saved in your browser's local storage on that device and are never sent anywhere — there is no account, no sign-in and no server call, so nobody else, including us, can see your count. To take it with you, open Settings and choose Download history (CSV): one row per recorded day, with the date, the steps and the active minutes. The file is built inside the page from your own storage; nothing is uploaded to produce it.
iOS requires an explicit permission before any website can read the accelerometer, as a privacy protection. Tap "Allow" when prompted — without it the counter can't detect movement and will stay at zero. Android browsers don't ask for this extra step.
It's completely free, with no signup and no step limit. Your count saves automatically to your browser's local storage, so it survives closing the tab, reloading, or restarting the phone. It won't appear on a different browser or device, because nothing is sent to a server. The daily goal starts at 10,000 steps and can be set anywhere from 500 to 100,000.
Running is inside the range: the cadence gate accepts footfalls as close together as 280 milliseconds, which is about 214 steps a minute — faster than most people run. Cycling and exercise with a different rhythm are not, and will under- or over-count, because the gate is looking for footstep-like timing between peaks.
The famous 10,000 is a brand name, not a clinical finding: it comes from manpo-kei, the "10,000-step meter", a pedometer sold in Japan in the 1960s. The largest pooled analysis since — Paluch et al., Lancet Public Health, 2022, combining 15 international cohorts — found the fall in mortality risk levelled off at roughly 6,000 to 8,000 steps a day for adults over 60, and roughly 8,000 to 10,000 for adults under 60. The goal here starts at 10,000 because it is the number people recognise, and Settings lets you set anything from 500 to 100,000.
