Q: Can I really get a domain free, forever?

A real paid-style TLD like .com — no, not forever. What is genuinely free forever is a community subdomain: yourname.eu.org, yourname.is-a.dev, yourproject.js.org, or a platform subdomain like app.vercel.app. Those never renew and never invoice you. The catch is that good names are first-come, and once somebody takes yours it is gone. Students can also get a real .me or .tech free for the first year through the GitHub Student Pack — but only while they can still prove they're a student.

Q: What happened to .tk, .ml and .ga domains?

Freenom, the registry behind the free .tk, .ml, .ga, .cf and .gq extensions, stopped issuing new free registrations and wound the programme down after legal action over abuse on those namespaces. Millions of sites lost their address with very little warning. It is the clearest illustration of why this directory prints the catch: a domain you did not pay for is a domain somebody else can take back.

Q: What's the catch with 'free domain with hosting' offers?

The domain is free for the first year only, and only while you keep an annual hosting plan. From year two it renews at the registrar's standard rate — usually $11–18 for a .com — and if you cancel the hosting you can lose the bundled deal entirely. It is still a good deal if you wanted that hosting anyway. Put the renewal date in your calendar the day you buy, and check the renewal price before you do.

Q: Which free hosting is best for Next.js or React apps?

Vercel is the most polished for Next.js because they build the framework — zero config, preview deploys and edge functions on the free plan. Netlify and Cloudflare Pages are excellent alternatives, and Cloudflare's free tier is the only one of the three with unlimited bandwidth. Vercel's free plan caps at 100 GB a month, which sounds enormous until one post does well.

Q: Is there a genuinely free VPS?

Oracle Cloud's Always Free tier is the standout and it is not close: up to 4 ARM cores, 24 GB of RAM and 200 GB of storage, with no time limit. AWS and Google Cloud offer far smaller free VMs (12 months and always-free respectively). All three want a card for identity verification even though the free tier itself costs nothing — and Oracle has been known to reclaim idle always-free instances, so keep yours doing something.

Q: Do free plans require a credit card?

Many don't. Vercel, Netlify, Cloudflare Pages, GitHub Pages, Supabase, Neon, InfinityFree and Koyeb all start with no card at all. The big clouds — AWS, Google Cloud, Oracle, Azure — require one for verification. Every provider card in this directory is tagged 'No credit card needed' where it applies, and you can filter the whole directory down to just those.

Q: How likely is a free tier to disappear on me?

Likely enough to plan for. Heroku ended its free dynos in November 2022 and took a generation of hobby projects with it. Railway replaced its free plan with a trial. Freenom stopped handing out free domains altogether. The safest setup is a host you can leave: keep your code in Git, keep your domain somewhere you control, and prefer providers whose free tier has survived several years rather than ones launched last quarter.
