How to Switch AltFTool Between Light, Dark and System Theme

Use the theme menu in the header (or the Theme section of the mobile menu) to pick Light, Dark or System. AltFTool starts in Light, remembers your choice in this browser, and System follows your device setting as it changes.

The three theme modes

All three modes use the same design tokens, so text, buttons and charts keep the same meaning and contrast whichever you choose.

Dark mode can be easier on the eyes at night and on OLED screens, while light mode is often easier to read in bright rooms. Pick whichever suits you; nothing else about the site changes.

  • Light: the default for first-time visitors, whatever their device setting.
  • Dark: a navy-slate dark theme for low-light use.
  • System: follows your operating system's light or dark preference and switches automatically when that preference changes, for example at sunset if your device is set to do so.

How to change the theme

  1. On a desktop or laptop

Open the theme menu next to the search button in the header and choose Light, Dark or System.

  2. On a phone or tablet

Open the menu sheet and use the Theme section to pick a mode.

  3. Keep browsing

The change applies immediately on every page that supports theming. You do not need to sign in.

How your choice is saved

Your choice is stored in your browser's local storage on this device. It is applied before the page paints, so you should not see a flash of the wrong theme when a page loads.

Because it is stored per browser, a different browser, a different device or a private window starts in Light again. Clearing site data for AltFTool also resets it. More on what is stored locally is in saved preferences and browser storage.

Why some pages always stay light

A small number of sections have their own fixed, light-only design, including some deals, ratings and editorial list pages. On those pages the theme menu is hidden and the page renders in light, and your saved choice is used again as soon as you move to another page.

If any page looks hard to read in your chosen theme, please report it with the page address. The accessibility guide covers other display options.

Frequently asked questions

Why did AltFTool open in light mode when my device is set to dark?

Light is the default for first-time visitors. Choose System in the theme menu if you want AltFTool to follow your device setting.

Does my theme choice sync across devices?

No. It is saved in each browser separately, so set it once on each device you use.

Why can't I find the theme menu on some pages?

A few sections have a fixed light design, so the theme menu is hidden there. Your choice applies again on other pages.
