Official scholarship and student aid portals

Government student funding is applied for on a small number of official portals: the National Scholarship Portal and SWAYAM in India, Federal Student Aid in the US, Student Finance on GOV.UK, the Canada Student Financial Assistance pages, StudyAssist in Australia, StudyLink in New Zealand and SUSI in Ireland. Application windows open and close each academic year, so check the dates on the portal itself.

Before you apply

  • Scholarship and grant portals publish their own application windows. Note the closing date the day you find a scheme.
  • Your institution's financial-aid or scholarship office can confirm which national schemes it participates in.
  • Never pay a third party to 'guarantee' a scholarship. Official schemes do not sell places.

Six signs a scheme website is fake

Fake benefit, scholarship and job-scheme sites copy official logos. These signs give them away.

  1. 1The domain is not a government oneA scheme name, a ministry logo or the national flag on a .com, .org, .in, .co or .online address proves nothing. Read the part right before the first single slash.
  2. 2You are asked to pay to register or applyApplying for government benefits, scholarships and registrations on the official portal is normally free. Fees for 'processing', 'registration' or 'guaranteed approval' are a classic scam.
  3. 3You are asked for an OTP, PIN or passwordNo government officer needs your one-time password, UPI or bank PIN. Anyone asking for it is trying to take over an account.
  4. 4The link came by SMS, WhatsApp or a social media adReal agencies rarely send sign-in links. Type the official address yourself or use this list.
  5. 5It promises guaranteed money or a deadline todayPressure and certainty are both warning signs. Official schemes publish eligibility rules and dates on their own portal.
  6. 6It asks you to install an app or APK from a linkOfficial government apps are listed on the official site and in the regular app stores. A side-loaded APK can read your messages and OTPs.

India: myScheme, National Scholarship Portal (NSP), SWAYAM. United States: Federal Student Aid, CareerOneStop. United Kingdom: Student Finance. Canada: Student aid (Canada.ca). Australia: StudyAssist, Your Career. New Zealand: StudyLink. Singapore: MySkillsFuture. Ireland: SUSI.

Does AltFTool check whether I am eligible?

No. AltF Impact asks for no personal details and makes no eligibility decision. Each official portal explains its own eligibility rules and is the only authoritative source.

How can I tell whether a portal is genuine?

Check that the domain is an official government one, such as gov.in, .gov, gov.uk, canada.ca, gov.au, govt.nz, gov.sg or gov.ie, or that it matches the address linked from this list. The AltF official website checker reads a pasted link and flags common warning signs.
