Six signs a government-looking website is fake
Fake benefit, scholarship and job-scheme sites copy official logos. These signs give them away.
- 1The domain is not a government oneA scheme name, a ministry logo or the national flag on a .com, .org, .in, .co or .online address proves nothing. Read the part right before the first single slash.
- 2You are asked to pay to register or applyApplying for government benefits, scholarships and registrations on the official portal is normally free. Fees for 'processing', 'registration' or 'guaranteed approval' are a classic scam.
- 3You are asked for an OTP, PIN or passwordNo government officer needs your one-time password, UPI or bank PIN. Anyone asking for it is trying to take over an account.
- 4The link came by SMS, WhatsApp or a social media adReal agencies rarely send sign-in links. Type the official address yourself or use this list.
- 5It promises guaranteed money or a deadline todayPressure and certainty are both warning signs. Official schemes publish eligibility rules and dates on their own portal.
- 6It asks you to install an app or APK from a linkOfficial government apps are listed on the official site and in the regular app stores. A side-loaded APK can read your messages and OTPs.

How do I know if a government website is real?
Read the real domain - the part just before the first single slash, ignoring everything before an '@'. Official sites end in government domains such as gov.in or nic.in (India), .gov (US), gov.uk (UK), canada.ca or gc.ca (Canada), gov.au (Australia), govt.nz (New Zealand), gov.sg (Singapore) or gov.ie (Ireland).
Is a website with 'gov' in its address always official?
No. 'gov.in.apply-now.com' belongs to apply-now.com, not to the government. Only the ending of the domain counts, which is why the checker shows the real domain separately.
Does this checker send my link anywhere?
No. The check is a few lines of JavaScript that run in your browser. The link is not fetched, logged or sent to AltFTool.
Some official bodies do not use a government domain. Will the checker flag them?
It flags anything outside the government domains it knows, unless the site is one of the official portals in the AltF Impact list - for example CareerOneStop or Citizens Information. A warning means 'confirm it first', not 'this is a scam'.
