Official government schemes and services in United Kingdom

In the United Kingdom almost every public service lives on GOV.UK, and benefits, Student Finance, apprenticeships, government grants, childcare support and the State Pension are all claimed or checked there or on a service.gov.uk sub-domain. Health services in England are explained on the NHS website. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland also run some services on gov.scot, gov.wales and nidirect.gov.uk.

How to spot a fake government website in United Kingdom

  • UK government services are on gov.uk or a service.gov.uk sub-domain. A site that copies the GOV.UK look but uses another domain is not official.
  • Check eligibility with the free benefits calculators GOV.UK links to - you do not need to pay anyone.
  • HMRC does not text or email you about tax refunds with a link to click.

Is this a real government website?

Paste a link from an SMS, WhatsApp forward or ad. The check runs in your browser; the link is not sent anywhere.

United Kingdom government portals FAQ

Where can I check which UK benefits I can get?

GOV.UK links to free, independent benefits calculators at gov.uk/benefits-calculators. They estimate what you could get; the claim itself is made on GOV.UK.

How do I find UK government grants?

Find a grant (find-government-grants.service.gov.uk) is the official search for government grants in the UK. Most are for organisations; business support is also listed under Business finance and support on GOV.UK.

Is a website ending in .co.uk an official government site?

No. Central government services use gov.uk. Some public bodies use other domains, such as nhs.uk, so check that the address matches the one linked from GOV.UK.
