The main girl-only central schemes are the National Scheme of Incentive to Girls for Secondary Education (Rs 3,000 fixed deposit for SC/ST girls entering Class 9), the Begum Hazrat Mahal National Scholarship for minority girls in Classes 9-12, the CBSE Merit Scholarship for Single Girl Child (Rs 500 per month in Classes 11-12), AICTE Pragati (Rs 50,000 per year for technical courses) and the UGC Post Graduate Indira Gandhi Scholarship for Single Girl Child (Rs 36,200 per year). States add their own, such as West Bengal's Kanyashree and Bihar's Mukhyamantri Kanya Utthan Yojana.
Rs 8,00,000 annual family income from all sources. Pragati pays Rs 50,000 per year of an AICTE-approved degree or diploma course and is limited to two girl children per family; applications go through the National Scholarship Portal.
A girl who is her parents' only child, with no surviving brothers; twin or fraternal sisters are allowed under the UGC scheme. The CBSE scheme additionally requires 60% or more in the CBSE Class 10 exam and a Class 10 tuition fee not exceeding Rs 1,500 per month, while the UGC postgraduate scheme requires admission to a non-professional PG course before age 30.
Most central schemes, including Begum Hazrat Mahal and AICTE Pragati, accept applications through the National Scholarship Portal at scholarships.gov.in during the annual application window, while CBSE and UGC schemes use their own portals and state schemes such as Kanyashree use the state portal. Deadlines and amounts change by notification each year, so verify the current guidelines before applying.
