Buy and sell women's clothing, ethnic wear and bags

Occasion wear is where buying second-hand makes most sense: a lehenga, saree or designer kurta is often worn once or twice. Handbags and footwear also sell well when the photos are honest. Use this guide to check what you buy and to price what you sell.

Buying used women: what to check

  • Ask for bust, waist, hip and length measurements; for blouses, check whether there are margins for alteration.
  • Look at the fabric in daylight: fading along folds, pilling, stains near the hem and loose embroidery or missing stones on heavy work.
  • For sarees, ask whether the blouse piece and fall are included and whether it has been dry-cleaned.
  • For handbags, check the corners, handles and the lining for wear, and whether the zip and clasps work. Ask about the dust bag and bill for premium brands.
  • For jewellery, ask whether it is gold, silver, gold-plated or imitation, and ask for the hallmark or bill for gold.

Selling women: get it ready

  • Photograph the full outfit, the fabric close up, the embroidery and the label, in daylight and without filters.
  • Give measurements and say whether it was altered.
  • Mention how many times it was worn and whether it was dry-cleaned.
  • List the dupatta, blouse piece or any other part that comes with it.

Fair pricing tips

  • Heavy occasion wear worn once can sell for a good share of its price; everyday kurtas and tops sell for much less.
  • Handbags hold value when the shape, corners and hardware are in good condition.
  • Gold jewellery is priced by weight and purity, not by the design; imitation jewellery sells for a small share of its price.

Common scams to watch for

  • "Gold" jewellery without a hallmark or bill sold at gold prices.
  • Buyers who send a QR code or a link to "receive" money. Receiving never needs a PIN or a scan.

Women: questions buyers and sellers ask

Is it worth buying a pre-owned lehenga?

Often, yes: many are worn once. Check the measurements and alteration margins, the embroidery and the fabric along folds, and try it on before paying if you can.

How do I check gold jewellery before buying?

In India, gold jewellery should carry a BIS hallmark with a HUID code. Ask for it and for the bill, and if in doubt have it tested at a jeweller before paying.

What should I include when selling a saree?

Say whether the blouse piece and fall are included, the fabric, how often it was worn and whether it was dry-cleaned, and add a close-up of the border and pallu.
