Buying used everything else: what to check

  • For books, check the edition and year (especially for exam guides and textbooks) and look for missing or highlighted pages.
  • For cycles, check the brakes, gears, chain, tyres and frame for cracks or rust, and ride it before paying.
  • For gym equipment, check welds, cables and pulleys, and the condition of grips and padding.
  • For instruments, play it or bring someone who can: check guitar necks for bowing, frets for wear and keyboards for dead keys.
  • For collectibles and art, ask about provenance and certificates and be careful with expensive items you cannot verify.

Selling everything else: get it ready

  • Give the edition and year for books, the frame size for cycles and the model for instruments.
  • Show any wear in the photos and list what is included (case, strings, charger, accessories).
  • For sets and series, say whether they are complete.

Fair pricing tips

  • Current editions of exam books and textbooks sell well; old editions sell for very little.
  • Well-kept instruments and branded cycles hold value better than most items.
  • Heavy gym equipment is priced partly by how hard it is to move.

Common scams to watch for

  • Collectibles and art sold with certificates you cannot check.

Everything Else: questions buyers and sellers ask

What should I check before buying a used cycle?

Brakes, gears, chain, tyres and the frame (look for cracks near the joints and rust). Ride it for a few minutes before paying.

Do old textbooks sell?

Current editions sell well, especially before exam seasons. Older editions sell for little, so say the edition and year clearly in the title.

How do I check a second-hand guitar?

Look down the neck for bowing, check the frets for grooves, play every string up the neck for buzzing and check the tuning pegs and electronics.
