Buy and sell used furniture and home items

When people move cities or homes, good furniture and kitchenware often sells for a fraction of its price. The catch is transport: measure first, plan how you will move it, and check for damage that is hard to see in photos.

Buying used home & living: what to check

  • Measure your space and the doorways and lift on your side before you go to see a large piece.
  • Check wood furniture for termite damage (small holes, powder), wobbly joints and water marks; check sofas for sagging cushions, stains and smells.
  • Open every drawer and door and test the hinges, locks and sliders.
  • For appliances that plug in, ask to see them running. For lamps, check the wiring and the plug.
  • Agree who handles loading and transport before you pay, and keep the cost of a tempo or movers in mind.

Selling home & living: get it ready

  • Give the width, depth and height in the description, and say whether it can be dismantled.
  • Photograph it in good light from the front and the side, and add close-ups of any mark.
  • Say which floor it is on and whether there is a lift. It decides whether a buyer can take it.
  • Mention the material (solid wood, engineered wood, metal) and the brand if it has one.

Fair pricing tips

  • Bulky items are priced partly by how hard they are to move: buyers expect a discount if they must arrange transport.
  • Solid wood and branded pieces hold value much better than engineered wood.
  • If you are moving by a fixed date, price for a quick sale and say so in the listing.

Common scams to watch for

  • Sellers asking for an advance to "hold" furniture you have not seen.
  • Buyers who ask you to pay a "transport" or "verification" fee before they collect.

Home & Living: questions buyers and sellers ask

How do I check used furniture for termites?

Look for tiny holes, fine powder below the piece, hollow-sounding wood when tapped and mud tubes along joints. Check the back and underside, not just the front.

Who pays for transport when buying used furniture?

Usually the buyer, but agree it before you pay. Ask whether the piece can be dismantled and which floor it is on.

What home items sell fastest?

Compact, useful items such as study tables, chairs, shelves, kitchen appliances and storage units sell faster than very large or heavy pieces.
