Buy and sell beauty products and grooming appliances

Beauty is a category where hygiene and authenticity come first. Sealed, unexpired products and grooming appliances such as trimmers, straighteners and dryers are what sell. Opened makeup and skincare is hard to resell and harder to trust.

Buying used beauty: what to check

  • Buy makeup and skincare only if it is sealed and within its expiry date. Check the batch code and manufacturing date on the pack.
  • Look at the packaging closely: misspelt words, blurry print and wrong fonts are signs of a fake.
  • Fragrances are often copied. Compare the bottle, cap and box with the brand's photos and ask for the bill.
  • For appliances, test that they heat or run, and check the cable and plug for damage.

Selling beauty: get it ready

  • List sealed, unexpired products and say so in the title.
  • Photograph the seal, the expiry date and the batch code.
  • For appliances, mention the age, how often it was used and whether the attachments and warranty card are included.
  • Do not list opened products that touch the skin directly unless they are clearly described as used.

Fair pricing tips

  • Sealed products within their expiry date sell for a good share of their price; anything close to expiry sells for much less.
  • Grooming appliances behave more like electronics: age, condition and accessories set the price.

Common scams to watch for

  • Counterfeit perfumes and makeup at prices far below the usual. If the price is too good, it usually is.
  • Relabelled expired stock: check the printed dates, not a sticker.

Beauty: questions buyers and sellers ask

Is it safe to buy used makeup?

Only sealed and unexpired makeup is safe to buy second-hand. Opened products can carry bacteria and you cannot know how they were stored.

How can I spot a fake perfume?

Check the box print, the cellophane wrap, the batch code on the box and the bottle (they should match), the cap fit and the spray. Ask for the bill.

Can I sell a hair straightener or trimmer I no longer use?

Yes. Clean it, test it, and list its age, the attachments and whether the warranty card is included.
