Buy and sell kids' clothes, toys and baby gear

Children outgrow clothes, shoes and toys long before they wear out, which makes this one of the most useful categories to buy second-hand. Safety matters more here than anywhere else: check prams, cots, car seats and small toys carefully.

Buying used kids: what to check

  • Buy clothes by age and measurements together: sizes for the same age vary between brands.
  • Check toys for loose small parts, sharp edges, cracked plastic and battery covers that need a screwdriver to open. Small parts are a choking hazard for children under three.
  • For prams and strollers, test the brakes, the folding lock, the harness buckle and the wheels.
  • Be careful with second-hand car seats: one that has been in an accident may be damaged invisibly. Ask about its history and check the expiry date if the brand prints one.
  • Avoid used feeding items such as bottle teats and breast pump parts that touch milk, unless they are sealed.

Selling kids: get it ready

  • Wash clothes and clean toys before photographing them.
  • Bundle clothes by size and season ("6-9 months, summer, 12 pieces").
  • List any missing parts or pieces of a toy or game, and include the age guidance from the box.
  • For gear, mention the brand, the model and whether the manual and parts are included.

Fair pricing tips

  • Big-ticket gear (prams, cots, high chairs) holds value well when it is clean and complete.
  • Clothes bundles sell for a small share of their price but sell quickly.
  • Toys with all their pieces and the box sell for noticeably more.

Common scams to watch for

  • Unusually cheap branded prams or car seats that may be copies without the safety features of the original.
  • Advance "booking" payments for items that are never handed over. Pay when you collect.

Kids: questions buyers and sellers ask

Is a second-hand car seat safe?

Only if you know its history. A seat that has been in a crash can be damaged without showing it. Ask the seller directly, check for cracks and the expiry date, and make sure the manual and all parts are included.

How should I sell outgrown kids' clothes?

Wash them, sort them by size and season, and list them as a bundle with one photo of the whole set and a few close-ups.

What should I check on a used pram?

Brakes, the folding lock, the harness and buckle, the wheels and the fabric. Fold and unfold it once before you pay.
