Italicise the book title and the journal name; article and page titles go in quotation marks. The generator applies this formatting when you copy.

How do I cite a book in MLA 9?

Write Last name, First name. Title of Book. Publisher, Year. The title is italicised and in title case. For two authors, reverse only the first name and join with and; for three or more, give the first author followed by et al. Shorten University Press to UP. MLA 9 does not require the city of publication for modern books. Add an edition, such as 2nd ed., after the title when you used a later edition.

How do I cite a website in MLA?

Write Author. "Title of Page." Title of Website, Publisher if different, Day Month Year, URL. Leave out https:// from the URL unless your instructor asks for it. When an organisation is both the author and the publisher, skip the author and start with the title, as in the example. If the page has no date, add an access date at the end, such as Accessed 1 Nov. 2026.

How do I cite a journal article in MLA?

The article is the source and the journal is its container: Author. "Article Title." Journal Name, vol. #, no. #, Year, pp. #–#. Add a DOI when one exists, written as https://doi.org/. If you found the article in a database such as JSTOR, you can add the database as a second container in italics with its URL or DOI. Abbreviate volume, number and pages as vol., no. and pp.

Formatting the Works Cited page

  • Title the page Works Cited, centred, at the end of the paper.
  • List entries alphabetically by the first word of each entry.
  • Use a half-inch hanging indent and double spacing.
  • In-text citations use author and page number without a comma: (Brown et al. 45).
  • Include only sources you actually cite in the text, unless your instructor asks for a full bibliography.

MLA citation generator: questions and answers

What is new in MLA 9?

MLA 9 kept the core-elements system from MLA 8 and added more guidance: detailed rules for citing works in different formats, inclusive language advice, and expanded explanations of containers and optional elements. Most Works Cited entries made under MLA 8 are still correct in MLA 9.

How do I cite a source with no page numbers?

Leave the page number out of the in-text citation, or use another locator the source provides, such as a paragraph (par. 4), section or timestamp for video. Do not invent page numbers from a printout or PDF viewer. If the source has stable page numbers, such as a PDF of a printed article, use those.

Does this tool detect plagiarism or AI writing?

No. It only formats citations from the details you enter. It does not scan documents and cannot tell whether text is plagiarised or AI-generated. Citing every source you quote, paraphrase or summarise is the best way to avoid accidental plagiarism, and the details you enter stay in your browser.

Should I include URLs in MLA citations?

MLA recommends including a URL or DOI for online sources, without the https:// prefix for URLs, while DOIs are given with https://doi.org/. Some instructors prefer no URLs at all, so check your course or institution's rule before submitting. You can delete the URL from the copied entry without changing anything else.
