How do I cite a book in APA 7th edition?

Use Author, A. A. (Year). Title of work: Capital letter also for subtitle. Publisher. Only the first word of the title and subtitle and proper nouns are capitalised, and the title is italicised. APA 7 dropped the publisher location, and if a book has a DOI you add it at the end as a link. List up to 20 authors in the reference; in-text, three or more authors become the first author plus et al.

How do I cite a website in APA?

Use Author or organisation. (Year, Month Day). Title of page. Site name. URL. Leave out the site name when it is the same as the author, as in the example above. If there is no date, write (n.d.), and add a retrieval date only when the page is designed to change over time. Italicise the page title when it is a standalone work.

How do I cite a journal article in APA?

Use Author, A. A., & Author, B. B. (Year). Title of article. Journal Name, volume(issue), pages. https://doi.org/... The journal name and volume are italicised, the issue number is not, and the article title uses sentence case without quotation marks. Present the DOI as a full https link. If there is no DOI and the article comes from a database, you can usually end after the page range.

Before you submit

  • Order the reference list alphabetically by the first author's surname.
  • Use a hanging indent and double spacing if your instructor asks for full APA format.
  • Check that every in-text citation has a reference and vice versa.
  • Follow your instructor's or department's variations, which take priority over the manual.
  • Proofread author names, years and DOIs against the original source; a generator cannot spot a typo in what you entered.

APA citation generator: questions and answers

What changed in APA 7 compared with APA 6?

The main changes for references are: the publisher location is dropped, up to 20 authors are listed, DOIs are written as https://doi.org/ links without the label DOI:, and in-text citations use et al. from the first mention for three or more authors. The phrase Retrieved from is only used with a retrieval date.

How do I cite a source with no author?

Move the title to the author position, followed by the date: Title of page. (2024). Site name. URL. In-text, use a shortened title in the author spot, with quotation marks for a page or article title or italics for a standalone work, such as ("How to Avoid Plagiarism," 2024).

Does this tool check my paper for plagiarism?

No. It formats citations from the details you enter and does not check documents for plagiarism or AI-generated text. Citing sources correctly is how you credit other people's work; ask your institution which checking tools, if any, it uses. Nothing you type into the generator is uploaded.

Are the generated citations always correct?

They follow APA 7 rules for the fields you fill in, but the output can only be as accurate as the input. Check names, dates and capitalisation against the source, and compare with your institution's style guide, since some courses modify APA.
