SGPA and CGPA calculator

SGPA is the sum of credits × grade points for one semester divided by that semester's total credits, and CGPA is the credit-weighted average of all your SGPAs. Enter subjects with their credits and letter grades (O = 10 down to F = 0) and the calculator below works out both, using the UGC CBCS 10-point scale.

Worked example: one semester, then two

  1. 1Semester 1: 4 credits A+ (9) = 36, 4 credits A (8) = 32, 3 credits O (10) = 30, 3 credits B+ (7) = 21, 2 credits B (6) = 12.
  2. 2Totals: 36 + 32 + 30 + 21 + 12 = 131 credit points over 4 + 4 + 3 + 3 + 2 = 16 credits.
  3. 3SGPA 1 = 131 ÷ 16 = 8.1875, shown as 8.19.
  4. 4Semester 2: SGPA 7.60 over 20 credits. CGPA = (8.1875 × 16 + 7.60 × 20) ÷ (16 + 20) = (131 + 152) ÷ 36 = 7.86.

SGPA 8.19 for semester 1 and a CGPA of 7.86 after two semesters.

How is SGPA calculated?

Multiply each course's credits by the grade point for the letter grade you earned, add those products, and divide by the total credits for the semester. Under the UGC Choice Based Credit System the usual points are O = 10, A+ = 9, A = 8, B+ = 7, B = 6, C = 5, P = 4 and F = 0. A failed course normally still counts its credits in the denominator until it is cleared, which is why one F can pull SGPA down sharply.

How do I calculate CGPA from SGPA?

CGPA is not a plain average of SGPAs. Each semester is weighted by its credits: multiply each SGPA by that semester's total credits, add them up and divide by the total credits across all semesters. A 24-credit semester therefore counts more than an 18-credit one. If every semester has the same credits, the weighted and simple averages happen to match.

Does every university use the same grade points?

No. The 10-point CBCS table above is common across Indian universities, but some institutions use different letter bands, give an extra point for distinction, or exclude audit and non-credit courses. Engineering universities such as VTU and Anna University publish their own tables. Edit the grade points in the calculator if yours differ, and check your institution's rule on the marksheet or academic regulations.

Make the most of the calculator

  • Add next semester's courses with expected grades to see what CGPA is realistic.
  • Keep every semester in one place so a CGPA for a placement form takes seconds.
  • Export your data as JSON before clearing the browser or switching devices.
  • If your university uses different grade points, enter the SGPA from your grade card directly in the semester list so every semester is counted the same way.
  • Compare the result with your official grade card each semester and correct any course you entered wrongly.

SGPA & CGPA calculator: questions and answers

What is the difference between SGPA and CGPA?

SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) covers one semester. CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) combines every semester completed so far, weighted by credits. Your final degree CGPA is the CGPA after the last semester, and that is the figure most employers and universities ask for.

Are failed subjects included in CGPA?

Usually the F grade counts as 0 points while its credits stay in the total, until you clear the course in a supplementary or repeat exam. After that, many universities replace the F with the new grade, but some show both attempts. Check your institution's rule, then update the grade in the calculator once the result is out.

Can I convert my CGPA to a percentage here?

Yes. Switch the grades tab to the convert mode or open the CGPA to percentage page. It shows the common formulas side by side, including CGPA × 9.5, (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 and CGPA × 10, but the correct one is always the formula printed on your own university's marksheet.

Is the calculated CGPA official?

No. It is an estimate based on what you enter. Your university's result portal and transcript are the official record, and rounding rules can differ in the second decimal place. Use the calculator for planning and checking, and quote the official figure on applications.
