What do I need on my final?

The score you need on the final is (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w, where w is the final's weight as a decimal. With a current grade of 82%, a final worth 30% and a target of 85%, you need 92% on the final. Enter your numbers below to see the required score for several targets at once.

Worked example: current 82%, final worth 30%

  1. 1The rest of the course is worth 1 − 0.30 = 0.70, so it contributes 82 × 0.70 = 57.4 points.
  2. 2For an 85% course grade: (85 − 57.4) ÷ 0.30 = 27.6 ÷ 0.30 = 92%.
  3. 3For an 80% course grade: (80 − 57.4) ÷ 0.30 = 22.6 ÷ 0.30 = 75.33%.
  4. 4Check: 57.4 + 0.30 × 92 = 57.4 + 27.6 = 85.

You need 92% on the final for an 85% overall, or about 75.3% for an 80% overall.

How is the required final exam score calculated?

Your course grade is a weighted average: current grade × (1 − w) plus final score × w. Rearranging for the final score gives (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w. The formula assumes your current grade already reflects everything except the final. If more assignments are still to come, work out your current weighted grade first with the weighted grade calculator, then use this page.

What if the answer is over 100%?

A required score above 100% means the target is out of reach with the final alone, unless your course offers extra credit, drops a lowest score or curves results. Lower the target to see what is achievable. A result below 0% means you have already secured that target even with a zero on the final, though most courses still require you to sit it, and some need a minimum final score to pass.

Things to check before you trust the number

  • The final's exact weight from the syllabus, not a guess.
  • Whether the course has a minimum final exam score to pass regardless of the average.
  • How letter-grade cut-offs round (is 89.5 an A?). Check your institution's rule.
  • Whether any assignments are dropped or replaced by the final.
  • Whether your current grade in the portal already includes every graded item, or only some of them.

Final grade calculator: questions and answers

How do I find my current grade?

Use the grade shown in your learning portal if it is weighted, or calculate it yourself: multiply each graded item by its weight, add them, and divide by the total weight graded so far. The weighted grade mode in the same grades tab does this, and its result feeds straight into this calculation.

What score do I need on the final to pass?

Set the target to your course's pass mark, often 50% or 60%, and read the required final score. For example, with a current 55% and a final worth 40%, passing at 50% needs (50 − 33) ÷ 0.40 = 42.5%. Some courses also require a minimum score on the final itself, so check the syllabus.

Can I use letter grades instead of percentages?

Enter the percentage that corresponds to the letter grade you want, such as 90 for an A on many US scales or 70 for a first-class mark in UK modules. Cut-offs differ by course and institution, so take them from your syllabus.

Does this work for semester-weighted or multiple finals?

Yes, as long as you can express the final as one weight. If a course has two exams left, combine them into one weight and treat the required score as the average you need across both. For more complex setups, list every component in the weighted grade mode.
