GPA calculator on the 4.0 scale

GPA is the sum of credit hours × grade points divided by total credit hours, using the US 4.0 scale where A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0 and F = 0, with plus and minus steps in between. Enter your courses below to get an unweighted GPA for a term or your whole record.

Worked example: one 14-credit term

  1. 1English, 3 credits, A (4.0): 3 × 4.0 = 12.0. Calculus, 4 credits, B+ (3.3): 4 × 3.3 = 13.2.
  2. 2Chemistry, 4 credits, A- (3.7): 4 × 3.7 = 14.8. History, 3 credits, B (3.0): 3 × 3.0 = 9.0.
  3. 3Total quality points = 12.0 + 13.2 + 14.8 + 9.0 = 49.0. Total credits = 3 + 4 + 4 + 3 = 14.
  4. 4GPA = 49.0 ÷ 14 = 3.50.

A term GPA of 3.50 on the unweighted 4.0 scale.

What are the grade points on the 4.0 scale?

  • A+ and A = 4.0, A- = 3.7
  • B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7
  • C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C- = 1.7
  • D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, F = 0
  • Plus and minus steps are 0.3 or 0.4 apart; some schools use no minus grades or award 4.3 for an A+, so check your institution's rule.
  • Multiply each course's credit hours by these points to get its quality points, then divide the total by total credits.

How do I calculate cumulative GPA?

Cumulative GPA uses every course across every term: add all quality points (credits × grade points) and divide by all credit hours attempted for a grade. Do not average term GPAs directly unless every term has the same credits. Pass/fail courses, withdrawals and some transfer credits are usually left out of the calculation, but schools differ, so check your institution's rule.

What about weighted GPA?

Many US high schools also report a weighted GPA that adds points for honors, AP or IB courses, often 0.5 or 1.0 extra, so the scale can exceed 4.0. There is no national standard for those bonuses, and many colleges recalculate GPA their own way. This calculator gives the unweighted figure, which is the one that compares most cleanly between schools.

Converting grades from other countries

A 4.0 GPA cannot be derived exactly from Indian percentages or a 10-point CGPA, because the scales were built differently. US admissions usually rely on a credential evaluation from a service such as WES or ECE. For a rough planning figure, use the Indian percentage to US GPA or US GPA to percentage converters in the related links. Treat any self-made conversion as indicative only.

GPA calculator (4.0): questions and answers

Is an A+ worth more than 4.0?

At most US colleges an A+ is capped at 4.0, which is what this calculator uses. A few institutions award 4.3 for an A+. This calculator does not model that, so add the difference by hand. Check your institution's rule in the registrar's grading policy.

What is a good GPA?

It depends on your goal. Some scholarships and honors programs set a minimum such as 3.0 or 3.5, and some graduate programs list a preferred GPA. Read the published requirement of the specific program instead of relying on a general rule.

How do I raise my GPA?

Model it first: add next term's courses with realistic grades and see the new cumulative figure. Higher-credit courses move GPA most. Because the cumulative total grows each term, early terms are easiest to influence, and many schools let a retaken course replace the earlier grade, which you can also model here.

Do pass/fail courses count toward GPA?

Usually not: a pass earns credit without grade points, so it is left out of both the points and the credits in the GPA. A fail in a pass/fail course is sometimes counted as an F. Leave pass courses out of the calculator unless your school says otherwise.
