Video aspect ratio and crop calculator

Enter a ratio and one side and the calculator gives the other, rounded to the even numbers video encoders expect. Pick a source and target format to see whether the whole frame fits with bars, or how much is cropped when it fills the screen - for example, a 16:9 video filling a 9:16 phone screen loses about two-thirds of its picture.

Common creator formats

  • 16:9 - YouTube videos, thumbnails, LinkedIn and X landscape video.
  • 9:16 - Shorts, Reels, TikTok and Stories.
  • 4:5 - Instagram portrait feed posts.
  • 1:1 - square posts and podcast cover art.
  • 2:3 - standard Pinterest pins.

Shoot once, publish everywhere

If a video will be cut for both YouTube and Shorts, frame the subject in the centre third of a 16:9 shot. That centre strip is what survives a 9:16 crop. The vertical safe-zone previewer shows where each app's buttons cover the frame.

Video aspect ratio and crop calculator: questions and answers

Why round to even numbers?

Most video encoders (H.264 with 4:2:0 colour) need even width and height. Odd sizes get padded or rejected.

What is the difference between fit and fill?

Fit shows the whole frame and adds bars. Fill covers the screen and crops the edges. The calculator shows both.
