Short answer

10,000 steps is about 7.5 km for an average adult with a 0.75 m step. Multiply your steps by your step length in metres and divide by 1,000: at 170 cm tall that makes 10,000 steps about 7.1 km.

How the calculation works

Formula

km = steps × step length (m) ÷ 1,000

A step counter counts steps, not metres, so distance is always steps multiplied by an assumed step length. With no other information the calculator uses 0.75 m, a typical adult walking step, which is what turns 10,000 steps into 7.5 km.

Step length grows with height. A widely used rule puts it at about 0.415 × your height, so add your height and the calculator switches to your own step length: 62 cm at 150 cm, 71 cm at 170 cm and 79 cm at 190 cm.

Pace, footwear and the ground all change real step length by a few percent, so treat the answer as a good estimate rather than a measured distance.

Worked example: 8,000 steps at 175 cm tall

  1. Step length = 0.415 × 175 cm = 72.6 cm (0.726 m).
  2. Distance = 8,000 × 0.726 ÷ 1,000 = 5.81 km.
  3. So 8,000 steps is about 5.8 km (3.6 miles).

Frequently asked questions

How many km is 10,000 steps?

About 7.5 km for an average adult with a 0.75 m step. It ranges from about 6.2 km at 150 cm tall to 7.9 km at 190 cm.

How many km is 5,000 steps?

About 3.8 km for an average adult, or 3.3 km at 160 cm and 3.7 km at 180 cm tall.

How do I convert steps to km in my head?

Divide your steps by about 1,330 (the average steps in a kilometre), or multiply them by 0.00075. Both give the same answer: 6,000 steps ÷ 1,330 ≈ 4.5 km.

Is a step the same as a stride?

Not strictly. A step is one foot landing; a stride is two steps, left plus right. Most step counters, including this calculator, say stride when they mean one step, and all figures here use the length of a single step.

How accurate is a steps-to-km conversion?

It can only be as accurate as the step count and the step length behind it. In a 2015 JAMA test, phone apps counted treadmill steps within about 7% of the true number, and some wrist wearables were further off. Measuring your own step length removes most of the remaining error.
