Short answer
1 km is about 1,330 steps for an average adult (0.75 m step), from about 1,610 at 150 cm tall to 1,270 at 190 cm. Divide 1,000 by your step length in metres to get your own figure.
Km to steps
How the calculation works
Formula
steps = km × 1,000 ÷ step length (m)
Distance divided by step length gives the number of steps. A kilometre is 1,000 m, so with the 0.75 m average adult step it takes 1,000 ÷ 0.75 ≈ 1,333 steps, which the calculator rounds to the nearest 10 because a guessed step length cannot resolve single steps.
Add your height and the calculator uses 0.415 × height as your step length. Taller walkers take longer steps and need fewer of them, which is why the same 5 km is about 6,340 steps at 190 cm but 8,030 at 150 cm.
Worked example: 5 km at 165 cm tall
- Step length = 0.415 × 165 cm = 0.685 m.
- Steps = 5 × 1,000 ÷ 0.685 = 7,302.
- So 5 km is about 7,300 steps, or 1 h 13 min at a brisk 100 steps a minute.

Frequently asked questions
How many steps are in 1 km?
About 1,330 for an average adult. Shorter people take more, about 1,610 at 150 cm, and taller people fewer, about 1,270 at 190 cm.
How many steps is 5 km?
About 6,670 steps for an average adult, which takes roughly 1 h 7 min at a brisk 100 steps a minute.
How many steps is 10 km?
About 13,330 steps for an average adult, or 15,060 at 160 cm and 13,390 at 180 cm tall.
Does walking faster change steps per km?
Yes, a little. People lengthen their step as they speed up, so a brisk walk usually needs slightly fewer steps per kilometre than a stroll, and running needs far fewer. The calculator assumes an ordinary walking pace.
