Short answer
10,000 steps is about 4.7 miles for an average adult with a 0.75 m (30 in) step, and a mile takes about 2,150 steps. Multiply steps by your step length in metres and divide by 1,609.344.
Steps to miles
How the calculation works
Formula
miles = steps × step length (m) ÷ 1,609.344
A mile is exactly 1,609.344 metres, so miles walked are steps × step length ÷ 1,609.344. With the 0.75 m average step, 10,000 steps comes to 4.66 miles.
If you know your height, step length is about 0.415 × height: 25 in at 4′11″, 28 in at 5′7″ and 31 in at 6′3″. The table below shows what that does to common step totals.
Worked example: 12,000 steps at 160 cm (5′3″)
- Step length = 0.415 × 160 cm = 0.664 m (26 in).
- Miles = 12,000 × 0.664 ÷ 1,609.344 = 4.95.
- So 12,000 steps is about 5.0 miles.

Frequently asked questions
How many miles is 10,000 steps?
About 4.7 miles for an average adult, from about 3.9 miles at 150 cm (4′11″) to 4.9 miles at 190 cm (6′3″).
Is 2,000 steps a mile?
Close. With the 0.75 m average step, 2,000 steps is 0.93 miles and a full mile takes about 2,150 steps. Taller people reach a mile in fewer steps.
How many miles is 5,000 steps?
