Short answer

10,000 steps takes about 1 h 40 min at a brisk 100 steps a minute, 2 h 5 min at a relaxed 80 and 1 h 23 min at a fast 120. Time is simply steps divided by your cadence.

How the calculation works

Formula

minutes = steps ÷ steps per minute (cadence)

Walking time depends on cadence, the number of steps you take each minute. Research on adults puts about 100 steps a minute at the start of moderate-intensity walking, which is why the calculator uses it as its "brisk" default.

Enter steps directly, or a distance in km or miles. A distance is first turned into steps with your step length (0.75 m on average, or 0.415 × your height), then divided by cadence.

Traffic lights, hills and stops add time, so a real walk usually takes a little longer than the pure walking time shown.

Worked example: A 4 km walk

  1. Steps = 4 × 1,000 ÷ 0.75 = 5,333 (average adult).
  2. Time at 100 steps a minute = 5,333 ÷ 100 = 53 minutes.
  3. At a relaxed 80 steps a minute the same walk takes about 1 h 7 min.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to walk 10,000 steps?

About 1 h 40 min at a brisk 100 steps a minute. Most people collect them across the day rather than in one walk.

How long does it take to walk 1 km?

About 13 min for an average adult at 100 steps a minute (1,330 steps), or 17 min at a relaxed pace.

How long does it take to walk a mile?

About 21 min at 100 steps a minute for an average adult, and about 27 min at 80 steps a minute.

How many steps do I take in 30 minutes?

About 3,000 at a brisk 100 steps a minute, 2,400 at a relaxed 80 and 3,600 at a fast 120.

How do I find my cadence?

Count your steps for 15 seconds while walking at your normal pace and multiply by four. The step counter's walk view also shows your live steps per minute.
