What is a project roadmap timeline?
A roadmap shows what happens when, and what depends on what. This template lays four quarters across the top and three workstreams down the side — product, design and marketing — with bars for each piece of work, dashed arrows for dependencies and a diamond for the launch milestone.
When to use it
- Sharing a high-level plan with stakeholders or a client.
- Lining up work across teams that depend on each other.
- Planning a personal project, course or event over several months.
How to make a project roadmap timeline in SketchFlow
- Step 1: Open the roadmap template in SketchFlow.
- Step 2: Rename the quarter headers to months or sprints if you plan in shorter periods.
- Step 3: Stretch or shrink each bar by dragging its side handle so it spans the right time.
- Step 4: Draw dashed arrows (A, then set the line style to dashed) between bars that depend on each other.
- Step 5: Export as PNG or SVG for your planning deck.
Tips for a better result
- Keep the near term detailed and the later quarters broad.
- Name outcomes, not tasks: 'Public launch' beats 'Deploy v2'.
- Revisit the roadmap monthly and change it openly.
Questions about this template
What should a project roadmap include?
A time scale, the workstreams or teams, the main pieces of work with rough dates, dependencies and key milestones.
Is a roadmap the same as a Gantt chart?
They are related. A Gantt chart tracks detailed tasks and dates; a roadmap stays high level and communicates direction.
Can I present the roadmap from SketchFlow?
Yes. Fit it to the screen with Ctrl/Cmd+0, then use the laser pointer (K) to walk people through it.
