What is a mind map?

A mind map puts one topic in the middle and lets ideas branch outward, which matches how people actually think through a subject. This template plans a product launch across six branches — audience, message, channels, timeline, budget and metrics — with room to add as many sub-ideas as you need on an infinite canvas.

When to use it

  • Planning a project, launch, essay or event before committing to a structure.
  • Taking notes in a lecture or meeting when topics jump around.
  • Breaking a big goal into areas you can assign to people.

How to make a mind map in SketchFlow

  1. Step 1: Open the mind map template in SketchFlow.
  2. Step 2: Double-click the centre ellipse and type your main topic.
  3. Step 3: Rename the six branches; delete any you do not need with the Delete key.
  4. Step 4: Add sub-ideas by duplicating a box (Ctrl/Cmd+D) and drawing a line or arrow from its branch.
  5. Step 5: Use Fit to screen (Ctrl/Cmd+0) to see the whole map, then export or share it.

Tips for a better result

  • Use one or two words per branch; detail belongs in the sub-ideas.
  • Give each branch its own colour so related ideas are easy to spot.
  • Work outward: finish a pass on every branch before going deeper on one.

Questions about this template

What is a mind map used for?

Mind maps are used for brainstorming, planning, note-taking and studying. They show how ideas relate to one central topic at a glance.

How many branches should a mind map have?

Between four and eight main branches is easiest to read. If you need more, group them under broader headings.

Can I make a hand-drawn style mind map?

Yes — that is SketchFlow's default look. Shapes and lines are drawn with a sketchy, hand-drawn stroke that you can tone down in the properties panel.

Does the mind map save automatically?

Your board is saved in your browser's local storage as you work, so it is still there when you come back on the same device and browser.
