Resume action verbs: 180 strong words by skill

Resume action verbs are the first word of each bullet point: they say what you did, so a recruiter skimming the page sees achievements rather than duties. Pick the verb that matches the kind of work (leading, building, improving, reducing, growing, analysing, communicating), avoid repeating the same one, and replace openers such as 'responsible for' or 'worked on'.

Resume action verbs FAQ

What can I write instead of 'responsible for'?

Say what you actually did with that responsibility: 'Managed a team of six' rather than 'Responsible for a team', or 'Ran weekly payroll for 120 staff' rather than 'Responsible for payroll'.

Should every bullet start with a different verb?

Try not to repeat a verb within the same job, and avoid using the same one more than two or three times on the whole resume. Variety also helps you describe different kinds of work accurately.

Past or present tense?

Past tense for previous roles and for finished achievements in your current role, present tense for ongoing duties in your current role. Be consistent within each job.
