About this tool
Check Instagram Teen Account defaults, DM and tag limits, supervision and a sleep-mode window worked out from wake time.
This guide checks the Instagram Teen Account defaults that already apply to an under-18 account — private by default, restricted DMs, tag limits, the most restrictive sensitive-content setting, nudity protection in DMs — and adds the controls Instagram does not set for you. It also works out a Sleep mode window from the school wake time, using the American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommendation of 8 to 10 hours a night for 13 to 18 year olds. Instagram's minimum age is 13.

Teen Account protections come from the registered birthday, so the checklist starts by confirming it.
A public creator page gets comment controls and bio-scrubbing steps a private account does not need.
The quiet window is calculated backwards from wake time plus a wind-down buffer, not copied from a generic 10pm rule.
Accounts registered as under 18 are private by default, can only be messaged by people they follow or are already connected to, get the most restrictive sensitive-content setting, can only be tagged or mentioned by people they follow, have nudity protection in DMs on, see a reminder after 60 minutes of use in a day, and have Sleep mode muting notifications overnight.
Under 16 they cannot loosen the protections without a parent approving the change through supervision. At 16 and 17 they can change the settings themselves, which is why linking supervision before that birthday is worth doing.
Supervision shows which accounts the teen has messaged in the last seven days, the accounts they follow and who follows them, the topics they have chosen, and their time spent — and it lets you set daily limits and block the app during set hours. It never shows the content of their messages.
Work backwards from the wake time. Teenagers aged 13 to 18 need 8 to 10 hours a night by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine's recommendation, so a 06:30 alarm means a 22:30 bedtime and a quiet window starting around 22:00. Instagram's own default window is 22:00 to 07:00.
