About this tool
Certificate Document Checklist
Documents you need to apply for a caste certificate or a legal heir certificate in India, as a tickable checklist.
Pick the certificate and tick off documents as you collect them. This page brings together 2 separate certificate document checklist pages (Caste, Legal heir) so you can compare them without hunting for the right one.
How to use Certificate Document Checklist
- 1
Open Certificate Document Checklist on AltFTool — it loads instantly in your browser.
- 2
Choose your certificate at the top: Caste, Legal heir. On a phone it is a drop-down list.
- 3
Fill in the certificate document checklist for that certificate; each of the 2 options keeps its own rules, data and defaults.
- 4
Read the result, then switch certificate to compare. The page link keeps your certificate (?v=caste), so you can bookmark or share it.
Why use Certificate Document Checklist
All 2 in one place
Caste, Legal heir and the rest sit behind one picker, so switching certificate takes a tap instead of a new search.
Built for each option
Every certificate keeps its own rules, numbers and defaults rather than one generic template.
Shareable view
The link remembers the certificate you picked, so a bookmark or a shared link opens straight on it.
Common use cases
- A Christian applicant discovering that a Scheduled Caste certificate is barred by paragraph 3 of the 1950 Order, while the same person could hold a Scheduled Tribe certificate because that Order has no religion condition.
- A family told by the bank that the legal heir certificate they obtained is not enough, and needing to know that a succession certificate from a civil court is the instrument for deposits and shares.
Frequently asked questions
Which certificate options does this tool cover?
2: Caste, Legal heir. Pick one at the top of the tool; the page link updates (for example ?v=caste) so you can bookmark or share that exact view.
Can a Christian or Muslim get an SC certificate?
No. Paragraph 3 of the Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order, 1950 provides that a person professing a religion other than Hindu, Sikh or Buddhist is not deemed a member of a Scheduled Caste. Sikhs were brought within it by amendment in 1956 and Buddhists in 1990. Scheduled Tribe status carries no religion condition at all.
What is the difference between a legal heir certificate and a succession certificate?
A legal heir certificate is issued by a revenue officer such as the Tahsildar and simply records who the surviving heirs are, which is enough for pension, gratuity, provident fund and utility transfers. A succession certificate is granted by a District Judge under the Indian Succession Act, 1925 and is what transfers debts and securities — bank deposits, shares and bonds — from an intestate estate. Neither one confers title to immovable property.
