Keep your TV's Tizen software current
Samsung periodically ships firmware updates that patch security issues, fix Smart Hub bugs, and add new features like additional Ambient Mode content or picture presets. Updates install over Wi-Fi, wired Ethernet, or USB.
What you should know
- Go to Settings > Support > Software Update to check for and install updates manually.
- Turn on Auto Update in the same menu so the TV checks and installs updates automatically, typically overnight while in standby.
- If the TV can't reach Samsung's servers, confirm its network connection under Settings > General > Network > Network Status first.
- For TVs that are offline, updates can be downloaded on a computer from the Samsung support site and installed via a FAT32-formatted USB drive using Settings > Support > Software Update > Update Now.
Do not unplug the TV or remove a USB drive while an update is installing — interrupting it can corrupt the firmware and require a service visit to recover.
Why it matters
An out-of-date Tizen build is one of the most common causes of streaming apps crashing, Smart Hub loading slowly, or new features simply not being available yet. Staying current also closes known security vulnerabilities on a device that's connected to your home network around the clock.
Best practices
- Leave Auto Update enabled and keep the TV plugged in and connected to Wi-Fi rather than fully unplugging it at the wall.
- Check for updates manually after setting up a new streaming app that seems to misbehave — an app fix sometimes ships alongside a firmware update.
- Update before a major sports or streaming event so the TV isn't mid-install when you need it.
Common problems and fixes
- "No update available" even though a newer version exists
- Confirm the TV's date and time are correct under Settings > General > System Manager > Time, since an incorrect clock can block the update check.
- Update download stalls or fails repeatedly
- Switch from Wi-Fi to a wired Ethernet connection for the download, or move the TV's Wi-Fi closer to the router to rule out a weak signal.
Tips and tricks
- Software Update also shows the current firmware version and build date, which Samsung support will often ask for when troubleshooting.
Frequently asked questions
Will updating erase my installed apps or settings?
No — standard software updates preserve your installed apps, picture settings, and Samsung Account sign-in.
