Turn a powered-on TV into a decorative display

Ambient Mode shows artwork, photos, the current time, or informational widgets like weather and news when you're not actively watching content, so the screen blends into a room instead of showing a plain black display.

What you should know

  • Press the Ambient button on the Samsung remote, or go to Home and select Ambient to enter Ambient Mode.
  • Browse and select background content from Categories, or add your own photos via Settings > My Content > My Photos.
  • Add widgets such as Clock, Weather, or Calendar from the Ambient Mode content browser.
  • Adjust brightness and enable motion/light sensor-based auto-dimming under Ambient Mode > Settings so the display doesn't stay too bright in a dark room.

Why it matters

Ambient Mode is one of the most-asked-about features on newer Samsung TVs because it's not obvious it exists — once discovered, it changes how people think about leaving the TV on, using it as decor rather than leaving a black screen or full video paused.

Best practices

  • Enable the light sensor so brightness automatically adjusts to the room instead of staying at a fixed level.
  • Rotate in personal photos periodically via My Photos to keep the display feeling fresh rather than reusing the same stock art.
  • Use Ambient Mode's Sleep Timer if leaving it on overnight isn't desired, since it does draw more power than standby.

Common problems and fixes

Ambient Mode looks washed out or too bright at night
Turn on the ambient light sensor under Ambient Mode > Settings, or manually lower brightness for evening viewing.
Photos won't import from a phone
Use the SmartThings app's Smart View or a USB drive to transfer photos, since direct phone-to-TV photo import depends on both devices being on the same Wi-Fi network.

Tips and tricks

  • Pressing the Ambient button again, or the Home button, exits Ambient Mode and returns to the previous screen without losing your place.

Frequently asked questions

Does Ambient Mode use a lot of electricity compared to standby?

It uses more power than standby since the panel stays on, though modern models optimize brightness to keep it reasonably efficient — a Sleep Timer helps if that matters for overnight use.
