Set up Apple Pay and cards in Wallet
The Wallet app on Apple Watch lets you add credit/debit cards, transit cards, and passes so you can pay or board transit by double-clicking the side button and holding the watch near a reader, without needing your iPhone.
How to open Wallet & Payments
- Open the Watch app on iPhone and go to Wallet & Apple Pay.
- Tap Add Card and choose an existing iPhone Wallet card or enter new card details.
- Verify the card with your bank via SMS, email, or the bank's app, then it's ready to use.
What you should know
- Cards can be added from the Watch app on iPhone (Wallet & Apple Pay) or synced automatically from cards already in the iPhone's Wallet.
- Double-clicking the side button brings up the default payment card for a contactless tap, authenticated by passcode or automatically if the watch stayed on your wrist since unlock.
- Express Transit cards can be used without waking the watch or entering a passcode, for faster transit gates.
Why it matters
Apple Pay on the watch is genuinely useful for gym runs or workouts where carrying a phone or wallet is inconvenient — but it depends on a passcode being set, since Apple Pay won't work on an unsecured watch.
Best practices
- Set a passcode on the watch — Apple Pay is disabled automatically if no passcode is configured.
- Remove cards immediately from Wallet & Apple Pay in the Watch app if the watch is lost or stolen.
Common problems and fixes
- Card won't verify
- Contact the card issuer's bank — verification is handled by the bank, not Apple, and may require a call or in-app confirmation.
- Double-click side button doesn't bring up Wallet
- Confirm a default payment card is set in Wallet & Apple Pay settings, and that the watch has a passcode enabled.
Tips and tricks
- Wake the screen while double-clicking the side button so you can swipe to switch cards before tapping to pay.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use Apple Pay on the watch without my iPhone present?
Yes — once cards are added, Apple Pay works independently of the iPhone as long as the watch is unlocked and worn.

- Apps ManagementApple Watch apps can install automatically alongside their iPhone counterpart, or be downloaded independently from the App Store on the watch. The Home Screen can be arranged as a grid or list, and unused apps can be removed to save storage.
