Install, organize, and remove watch apps
Apple Watch apps can install automatically alongside their iPhone counterpart, or be downloaded independently from the App Store on the watch. The Home Screen can be arranged as a grid or list, and unused apps can be removed to save storage.
What you should know
- The App Store app on the watch allows direct downloads of watch-only or watch-compatible apps without needing the iPhone app.
- Home Screen layout (grid or list) is set in Settings → App View on the watch, or in the Watch app under My Watch → App View.
- By default, installing an iPhone app that has a watch component adds the watch app automatically — this can be turned off in the Watch app's General settings.
Why it matters
Apple Watch has limited storage compared to an iPhone, so managing which apps stay installed — and which run in the background — keeps the watch responsive and frees up space for music, podcasts, or offline maps.
Best practices
- Switch to List view in App View settings if you find the grid layout hard to tap accurately.
- Periodically remove watch apps you no longer use directly from the watch's Home Screen by pressing and holding, then tapping the minus icon.
Common problems and fixes
- An iPhone app's watch companion didn't install
- Open the Watch app on iPhone, scroll to Available Apps, and manually tap Install next to the app.
- Watch storage is full
- Remove unused apps, reduce downloaded music/podcast episodes, and check Settings → General → Storage on the watch for a breakdown.
Tips and tricks
- Press the Digital Crown from any app to instantly return to the Home Screen without closing the app in the background.
