Manage passcode, Unlock with iPhone, and app permissions

Apple Watch security centers on a passcode, which unlocks features like Apple Pay and enables wrist detection to auto-lock when removed. Privacy settings control which apps can access location, health data, and microphone.

What you should know

  • Unlock with iPhone lets the watch unlock automatically when the paired iPhone is unlocked nearby, under Settings → Passcode.
  • Wrist Detection auto-locks the watch when removed and is required for Apple Pay to remain enabled — disabling it also disables Apple Pay.
  • Per-app privacy permissions (Location, Microphone, Health data access) can be reviewed and changed in Settings → Privacy & Security on the watch or via the Watch app.

Why it matters

Because Apple Watch can make payments and, on cellular models, calls independently of the iPhone, a passcode and wrist detection are the main line of defense if the watch is lost or stolen.

Common problems and fixes

Unlock with iPhone isn't working
Make sure both devices have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on, Passcode Unlock is enabled in the Watch app, and both are signed into the same Apple ID.
Forgot the watch passcode
Unpair and re-pair the watch from the Watch app, which erases the watch and lets you set a new passcode during setup, or restore from a backup.

Tips and tricks

  • Turn off Wrist Detection only temporarily for medical reasons — leaving it off permanently disables Apple Pay and reduces auto-lock security.

Frequently asked questions
