Back up, unpair, and reset your Apple Watch
Apple Watch data is backed up automatically to the paired iPhone whenever they're connected — there's no separate manual backup step. Unpairing creates a fresh backup and erases the watch, which is also how you reset it to factory settings.
How to open Backup & Reset
- Bring the watch and iPhone close together and open the Watch app.
- Go to My Watch → All Watches, tap the (i) icon next to the watch you want to remove.
- Tap Unpair Apple Watch, confirm, and keep the iPhone nearby until the process finishes to ensure a backup is saved.
What you should know
- Backups happen continuously in the background while paired and connected — no manual backup action is needed.
- Unpairing (Watch app → My Watch → All Watches → info icon → Unpair Apple Watch) erases the watch and saves a final backup to the iPhone.
- A full erase can also be done directly on the watch under Settings → General → Reset → Erase All Content and Settings, without a paired iPhone.
Why it matters
Knowing that unpairing both erases and backs up at the same time prevents the two most common mistakes: losing data by resetting without unpairing first, or thinking a separate backup step is required before selling or giving away a watch.
Best practices
- Always unpair through the Watch app rather than erasing directly on the watch, unless the iPhone is lost or unavailable, so a backup is preserved.
- Remove Apple Pay cards manually before giving away or selling a watch, even though erasing also removes them.
Common problems and fixes
- Restoring from backup doesn't bring back all apps
- Some third-party apps require reinstalling manually after restore since only their data, not the app binary, is backed up.
- Watch is disabled after too many failed passcode attempts
- Erase the watch directly from Settings → General → Reset on the watch itself, since a disabled watch can't be unlocked with the passcode anymore.
Tips and tricks
- If you're just switching which iPhone the watch is paired to, unpairing keeps a synced backup so restoring on the new iPhone recovers your Activity history and settings.
Frequently asked questions
Do I lose my Activity/Health history if I reset the watch?
No — Health and Activity data is stored in the Health app on iPhone, not solely on the watch, so it survives an unpair and reset.
