What is a lean canvas?
The lean canvas squeezes a business plan onto one page. Nine boxes cover the problem, who has it, your unique value proposition, the solution, how you reach customers, how you make money, what it costs, which numbers you track and what makes you hard to copy. This template keeps the standard layout so it reads the way people expect.
When to use it
- Testing a startup or side-project idea before building anything.
- Comparing several ideas side by side on one board.
- Explaining a business model to a co-founder, mentor or class.
How to make a lean canvas in SketchFlow
- Step 1: Open the lean canvas template in SketchFlow.
- Step 2: Fill the boxes in order: customer segments and problem first, then value proposition and solution.
- Step 3: Add points as text (T) or sticky notes (N) inside each box.
- Step 4: Duplicate the whole canvas (select all, Ctrl/Cmd+D) to sketch an alternative version beside it.
- Step 5: Export as PNG or SVG for your pitch or notes.
Tips for a better result
- Write the problem in the customer's words, not yours.
- Your unique value proposition should fit in one sentence.
- Mark guesses versus validated facts with different note colours.
Questions about this template
What is the difference between a lean canvas and a business model canvas?
The lean canvas adapts the business model canvas for early-stage ideas: it replaces partners, activities, resources and relationships with problem, solution, key metrics and unfair advantage.
What goes in the unfair advantage box?
Something competitors cannot easily copy or buy, such as a community, exclusive data or deep expertise. It is fine to leave it blank at first.
Can I keep several canvases?
Yes — the board is infinite, so place versions side by side, or save each as its own .sketchflow file.
