Returning to Work After a Career Break

A career break for caregiving, health, study, relocation or anything else does not need hiding. This toolkit helps you name the break in one line on your resume, refresh your skills section against current postings, prepare a short, confident answer about the gap, and plan your first 90 days back.

  • 5-step checklist
  • 4 tools
  • No sign-up

Your checklist

  • Add the break as one line with dates and a neutral label, for example 'Career break - family care'.
  • List anything useful from the break: courses, volunteering, freelance work, organising.
  • Check current postings for tools and terms that changed while you were away.
  • Prepare a two or three sentence answer about the gap that ends on why you are ready now.
  • Look for 'returnship' and returner programmes, and check each one on the company's own careers site.

Returning to work FAQ

Should I explain a career gap on my resume?

A single honest line is usually better than an unexplained gap. You do not need to give private details; 'career break - caregiving' or 'career break - health' is enough.
