How to Start an Online Store

Starting an online store is easier than ever, but the tools are only part of the job. You will also need a clear product, a plan for payments and shipping, and an understanding of the rules where you sell.

  1. 1

    Validate your product

Before building anything, check there is demand for what you want to sell and that you can source or make it reliably. Think about margins after product cost, fees, shipping and returns.

  2. 2

Choose a platform or a marketplace

Hosted ecommerce platforms let you run your own branded store with themes and apps. Marketplaces give you access to existing shoppers but with less control and their own fees. Many sellers use both.

  3. 3

    Set up payments

Most platforms include or integrate with payment processors. Check transaction fees, payout timing and which payment methods your customers expect.

  4. 4

    Plan shipping and returns

Decide where you ship, how you price delivery and how returns will work. A clear returns policy builds trust and reduces support questions.

  5. 5

    Handle legal and tax basics

You will usually need a privacy policy, terms of sale and a returns policy, and you may need to register for and collect sales tax or VAT. Rules depend on your country and where your customers are, so get local advice if unsure.

  6. 6

    Launch and learn

Start with a small range, test checkout yourself, and watch which pages and products perform. Add apps and features only when you have a clear reason.

Common mistakes

  • Installing many paid apps before making a first sale.
  • Underestimating shipping, returns and payment fees.
  • Copying product descriptions or images you do not have rights to.
  • Ignoring tax obligations in the countries you sell to.

FAQ

Should I use a marketplace or my own store?

A marketplace brings existing shoppers but sets the rules and takes fees. Your own store gives you control over branding and customer relationships but you have to bring the traffic. Many sellers start on one and add the other.

Do I need a business registration?

It depends on your country, the size of your sales and how you operate. Check with your local tax authority or an adviser.

What is dropshipping?

Dropshipping means a supplier ships products directly to your customers, so you do not hold stock. It lowers upfront costs, but you have less control over quality and delivery times, which can affect reviews and returns.

Do ecommerce platforms offer free trials?

Many do, and the length and conditions vary. Check the official site for current trial terms.
