About this tool
Calculate your waist-to-hip ratio and see the WHO health risk band for men and women, plus body shape.
Waist to Hip Ratio Calculator divides your waist circumference by your hip circumference and maps the result onto the WHO (2008) risk bands, which differ by sex: below 0.90 is low risk for men and below 0.80 for women, while 1.00 and above for men or 0.85 and above for women marks substantially increased metabolic risk. It also names your fat-distribution pattern (apple or pear), checks your waist against the 94/102 cm WHO thresholds and the 90/80 cm cut-offs used for South Asian populations, and shows the waist measurement that would put you in the low-risk band.

Uses the separate 0.90/1.00 thresholds for men and 0.80/0.85 for women rather than one generic cut-off.
Flags the 90 cm (men) and 80 cm (women) waist thresholds used for South Asian populations, not just the WHO 94/102 cm figures.
Shows the waist measurement that would move you into the low-risk band at your current hip size.
Using WHO cut-offs, a ratio below 0.90 for men and below 0.80 for women is considered low risk. Ratios of 1.00 or more in men, or 0.85 or more in women, indicate substantially increased metabolic risk.
Measure the waist midway between the lowest rib and the top of the hip bone after breathing out normally, and the hips around the widest part of the buttocks. Keep the tape horizontal and snug but not tight.
They measure different things. BMI reflects overall weight relative to height; waist-to-hip ratio reflects where fat sits. Abdominal fat is more closely associated with cardiovascular and metabolic risk, so the two are best read together.
Slightly — meals, bloating and posture can shift a waist reading by a centimetre or two. Measure at the same time of day, ideally in the morning before eating, for comparable results. This tool is informational and does not replace medical assessment.
