About this tool
Turf Roll Calculator
Estimate how many sod or turf rolls a lawn needs, including trim wastage, pallets and the delivered cost.
A turf roll calculator converts a lawn measurement into the number of sod rolls to order, using order area = measured area × (1 + trim wastage %) and rounding up to whole rolls. It is built for homeowners and landscapers pricing a new lawn, and it also reports pallets, spare turf and the delivered cost. Standard cut turf rolls measure 1.64 m × 0.61 m and lay exactly 1 m² each.

Why use Turf Roll Calculator
Wastage is built in
Adds 5%, 10% or 15% for straight, curved or awkward lawns instead of leaving you to guess.
Whole rolls only
Rounds up the way a depot actually sells turf, so the quantity you order is the quantity you get.
Full delivered cost
Combines roll price, delivery and laying labour into one cost per square metre.
Common use cases
- Pricing a 10 m × 8 m back garden lawn before calling a turf supplier for a quote
- Working out how many pallets a landscaping crew must fit on the van for a job
- Converting a US sod order between 16 in × 24 in slabs and 2 ft × 5 ft rolls
Frequently asked questions
How many turf rolls do I need for 100 square metres?
About 105 rolls of standard 1 m² turf at a 5% trim allowance, or 110 rolls at 10% for a lawn with curved edges. One standard roll measures 1.64 m × 0.61 m and covers 1 m², so the roll count and the square metre figure are close to interchangeable before wastage.
How much extra turf should I order for wastage?
Order 5% extra for a square or rectangular lawn, 10% where there are curves, beds or a path to cut around, and up to 15% on slopes or heavily shaped areas. The extra covers offcuts that end up too small to lay.
How many rolls fit on a pallet?
A typical turf pallet holds about 50 one-square-metre rolls, roughly 750–1,000 kg depending on how wet the soil is. Suppliers vary, so check the pallet load before booking access or a forklift.
How soon after delivery must turf be laid?
Within 24 hours in mild weather and the same day in hot weather — stacked turf heats up and yellows quickly. Finish levelling and raking the soil before the delivery arrives rather than after.
