This calculator works out how much insect mesh to buy off the roll for a set of windows and doors, plus the frame section and fixing tape each opening needs. Because mesh is sold in fixed roll widths, the answer is a cutting plan rather than an area: for every opening it compares taking the net upright along the roll against turning it 90 degrees, and picks the orientation needing fewer panels — an extra panel means a seam, and a seam is where insects get through. Mesh grade is handled too, since 16 to 18 strands per inch is the standard mosquito screen at about 1.2 mm aperture and finer counts are needed only for smaller insects.

Add a hem allowance of about 3 inches to the width and height, then see whether the result fits across your roll. A 4 ft by 3 ft window off a 4 ft roll fits when turned sideways, so it takes 4.25 running feet of mesh and needs no joint. Taking it upright would need two panels and 6.5 running feet.
Around 16 to 18 strands per inch, which leaves an aperture close to 1.2 mm — small enough to stop mosquitoes while still letting air through. Finer grades of 20 to 30 mesh are needed for midges, sandflies and thrips, but they noticeably reduce airflow and make a room feel stuffier.
Fibreglass mesh is cheaper, will not corrode, and flexes back if pushed, which suits velcro and magnetic nets on windows. Stainless steel mesh resists cats, pets and rough handling and lasts longer on a door, but costs more and can crease permanently. Coastal locations favour stainless 304 or fibreglass over plain galvanised mesh.
Yes, for anything door height. A net taller than about 6 feet without a mid rail sags in the middle and bows away from the frame, leaving a gap along the edge. One horizontal stiffener across the width is usually enough, and it also stops the mesh being pushed out when someone leans on it.
