This calculator sizes a kitchen backsplash tile order as counter run multiplied by band height, plus the taller panel behind the hob, minus any window, and then converts that net area into whole boxes with a wastage allowance. It assumes the standard Indian modular kitchen geometry of a 36 inch counter with overhead cabinets starting at 54 to 60 inches, giving an 18 to 24 inch tiled band. 18 to 24 inches, measured from the countertop to the underside of the overhead cabinets. With an Indian counter at 36 inches and wall cabinets starting at 54 to 60 inches, 24 inches is the most common band, while the section behind the hob is usually taken higher, up to the chimney.
Divide the tiled area by the area of one tile and add 10% to 15%. A 12 running foot counter with a 24 inch band is 24 square feet, which needs about 13 tiles of 300 x 600 mm before wastage, or two boxes of eight.
Behind a gas hob, tile up to the chimney hood at minimum, because that zone takes the heat, oil splatter and steam. Tiling the whole wall to the ceiling is a style choice, not a requirement, and it roughly doubles the tile quantity for that section.
Epoxy grout is worth the extra cost behind a hob and sink because it does not absorb oil, turmeric or water and can be scrubbed without losing colour. Cement grout is cheaper but stains permanently in a cooking zone, and typically needs replacing within a few years.
