Pick the right standard rug size for a living, dining or bedroom layout, with placement rules and the floor border left around it.
This selector applies the standard interior-design clearance rules for rug size rather than eyeballing it: a dining rug must extend at least 60 cm beyond every edge of the table so a chair pulled back keeps all four legs on it; a living-room rug on a front-legs-on layout runs about 30 cm past the sofa on each side; and a bedroom rug should show 60 cm of soft floor down each side and past the foot. It converts those clearances into the smallest standard size — 5x8, 6x9, 8x10, 9x12 and the rest — and checks the 45 cm border of bare floor that should remain around it.

Big enough to extend at least 60 cm (24 in) past every edge of the table, so a chair pulled back to sit down still has all four legs on the rug. A 180 x 90 cm table therefore needs a rug covering at least 300 x 210 cm, which is a 7x10 ft or, with more comfort, an 8x10 ft.
All legs on looks the most finished and needs the rug to run about 45 cm beyond the whole seating group, which usually means a 9x12 or larger. Front legs on is the common compromise: the rug tucks under the front of each piece, stays roughly 30 cm wider than the sofa on each side, and holds the arrangement together without the cost of an oversized rug.
Around 45 cm of bare floor between the rug and the wall is the usual target, and below about 20 cm the rug starts to read as badly fitted wall-to-wall carpet rather than a deliberate choice. The border should also be reasonably even, so pick a rug whose proportions follow the room's.
