Author the banner 1920 px wide and match the height to the header height you selected in Mod Tools — commonly 128, 192, 256 or 384 px. Because Reddit fills the header width, the important content should sit in the middle rather than near the edges.
The banner is a cover fill, so a narrow header shows a narrower slice of the same image. On a 1920 x 384 px banner a phone-width header keeps only about 824 px, roughly 43% of the width, all of it taken from the centre.
Upload the community icon at 256 x 256 px. It is displayed far smaller — around 72 px in the community header, 40 px in a byline and about 20 px in list views — so a stroke thinner than about 6 px in the 256 px file disappears at the smallest size.
