This calculator returns the professional tax deductible in Karnataka for a monthly salary under the Karnataka Tax on Professions, Trades, Callings and Employments Act, 1976, as amended with effect from 1 April 2023. The state now has only two bands: nil below Rs 25,000 a month and a flat Rs 200 a month at or above it, capped at Rs 2,400 for a full year. There are two bands. A monthly salary below Rs 25,000 attracts no professional tax, and a salary of Rs 25,000 or more attracts a flat Rs 200 a month, or Rs 2,400 for a full year.
Yes. With effect from 1 April 2023 the exemption threshold rose from Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000 a month and the intermediate slab was removed, so many employees who previously paid Rs 200 a month now pay nothing.
Notified exemptions include senior citizens who have attained 60 years of age and persons with a permanent physical disability, including blindness. Anyone earning below Rs 25,000 a month is outside the charge in any case.
The tax deducted for a month is payable by the 20th of the following month, together with the prescribed monthly statement. Late payment attracts interest and penalty, so confirm the current filing calendar with your compliance adviser.
