About eight weeks before moving day for a normal domestic move, and three to four months for an international one. Eight weeks is the lead time removal firms ask for on a peak-season booking, and it leaves room to serve a one- or two-month tenancy notice without paying rent on two homes. If you have less time, work the phases in order and accept that some will overlap.
Five things that cannot be done later: photograph the electricity, gas and water meters at both addresses with the date visible; tick every carton off the inventory as it is loaded; walk each empty room, cupboard and balcony before locking up; note any damage on the delivery sheet before signing it; and keep documents, jewellery and medicines with you rather than on the truck. Signing a delivery sheet clean makes a later damage claim very hard.
Around four weeks out. Electricity, gas, water and broadband providers generally want several working days' notice for a transfer or disconnection, and broadband installation at a new address can take two to three weeks if a new line is needed. Book the new connections at the same time so you arrive with power and internet rather than negotiating both from an empty flat.
At least 24 hours before it is loaded, and longer for a heavily iced freezer. Empty it, switch it off, prop the doors open and put towels underneath to catch the meltwater — a fridge moved while wet leaks over everything under it, and moving one with ice inside can damage the cooling circuit. Most manufacturers also ask you to stand it upright for a few hours before switching it back on at the new address.
