About this tool
Answer a few questions to see whether ITR-1 Sahaj can be filed for your income sources.
ITR-1 Sahaj Eligibility Checker walks through the conditions the Income Tax Department attaches to the one-page Sahaj return — ordinarily resident status, total income up to Rs 50 lakh, a single house property, agricultural income under Rs 5,000 and no business income — and tells you whether you qualify. If any answer rules Sahaj out, it names the exact reason and points you to ITR-2, ITR-3 or ITR-4 Sugam instead. It is built for salaried filers and pensioners who want to confirm the right form before opening the e-filing portal.

Covers the awkward ones people miss - directorship, unlisted shares, foreign assets, section 194N TDS and carried-forward losses.
When ITR-1 is blocked it maps each reason to ITR-2, ITR-3 or ITR-4 Sugam so you know where to go next.
Your income figures are never uploaded - the checks are plain JavaScript on your own device.
An ordinarily resident individual with total income up to Rs 50 lakh from salary or pension, one house property, other sources such as interest, and agricultural income up to Rs 5,000. Non-residents and RNOR taxpayers cannot use it.
From AY 2025-26 the department allows long-term capital gains under section 112A of up to Rs 1.25 lakh in ITR-1, provided there is no capital loss to set off or carry forward. Any other capital gain moves you to ITR-2.
Being a company director, holding unlisted equity shares, owning foreign assets or foreign income, lottery or race-horse winnings, income from more than one house property, TDS under section 194N, and brought-forward losses all rule out Sahaj regardless of income size.
Individuals without business income generally file ITR-2. With business or professional income you file ITR-3, or ITR-4 Sugam if you are a resident declaring income presumptively under section 44AD, 44ADA or 44AE with total income up to Rs 50 lakh.
