About this tool
Browse Hindi muhavare with literal sense, real meaning, usage sentences, exam-level tags and a built-in meaning quiz.
Hindi Muhavare Explorer is a searchable collection of 32 widely taught Hindi idioms, each shown with its literal word-for-word sense, its actual meaning in Hindi and English, a usage sentence and the exam band it usually appears in. A muhavara is a phrase whose meaning cannot be worked out from its words and which bends to fit the sentence around it — unlike a lokokti, which is a complete saying used unchanged. A built-in four-option quiz draws its questions and distractors from the same set.

Each entry separates the word-for-word sense from the idiomatic meaning, which is where most mistakes start.
Muhavare are graded on correct usage, so each one appears inside a full Hindi sentence with an English gloss.
Idioms are grouped by the level they normally appear at, from Class 6-8 up to competitive papers.
A muhavara is an incomplete phrase that changes form to fit the sentence, such as नाक कटना becoming 'पिता की नाक कट गई'. A lokokti or kahavat is a complete, fixed saying that carries a general truth and is quoted as it is, such as 'नाच न जाने आँगन टेढ़ा'.
It means a treacherous person hiding among your own people — literally 'a snake in the sleeve'. It is used of someone trusted as a friend who turns out to be working against you.
Use it inside a complete sentence with the verb inflected correctly, because most papers award marks for वाक्य प्रयोग rather than for stating the meaning. Writing 'लोहे के चने चबाना' alone usually scores less than 'इस परीक्षा को पास करना लोहे के चने चबाने जैसा है'.
The set covers idioms that recur in Hindi textbooks and question papers, tagged Class 6-8, Class 9-10 or competitive exams. Syllabuses differ by board and year, so treat the tags as a study guide and confirm against your own prescribed list.
