The Dry Eye Blink Trainer converts a blink count into blinks per minute and compares it with the 15 to 20 blinks a minute normally seen at rest. Blink rate falls to roughly a third of that during concentrated screen work — Tsubota and Nakamori reported the effect in the New England Journal of Medicine in 1993 — and the resulting long gaps between blinks let the tear film evaporate. The tool sizes that shortfall in blinks per hour and builds a paced complete-blink drill, timed to the 20-20-20 interval, to make it up.

About 15 to 20 blinks a minute at rest in adults. During reading or concentrated screen work the rate typically drops to around 5 to 7 a minute, which is the change that drives screen-related dryness rather than the screen light itself.
They help the evaporative form of dry eye, which is the most common type, because a complete blink spreads the tear film and compresses the meibomian glands along the lid margin. They will not fix aqueous-deficient dry eye, blepharitis or an underlying condition such as Sjogren syndrome, so persistent symptoms need an eye examination.
A blink where the upper lid does not fully meet the lower lid, leaving the lower cornea uncovered. Incomplete blinks are common during screen use and are associated with meibomian gland dysfunction, which is why a deliberate 2-second squeeze is part of the drill.
Pairing it with the 20-20-20 rule works well: every 20 minutes of near work, run about 20 deliberate complete blinks and then look at least 6 metres away for 20 seconds. On an 8-hour screen day that is 24 drills costing roughly 24 minutes in total.
