Install, uninstall, and move games across storage devices
Your full digital library — everything you own, including games you haven't installed — lives under My games & apps, while Settings → System → Storage shows what's actually taking up space and lets you move titles between the internal drive, an external USB drive, or a Seagate Storage Expansion Card.
What you should know
- Press the Xbox button → My games & apps → See all → Full library to browse everything tied to your account, installed or not.
- Go to Settings → System → Storage to see space used per device and per game.
- Highlight a game, press the Menu button, and choose "Uninstall" to free space, or "Move" / "Copy" to transfer it to another connected storage device.
- Enable Settings → General → Updates → "Keep games & apps up to date" so installed titles patch automatically in the background.
Why it matters
Modern game installs regularly run 50–150GB, so unmanaged libraries fill an internal drive fast — leading to failed updates, blocked new installs, and console slowdowns from a nearly-full drive.
Best practices
- Add a USB 3.0 external drive (256GB minimum) or a Storage Expansion Card for Xbox Series X|S if you regularly rotate between more games than fit internally.
- Uninstall finished single-player games instead of leaving them installed indefinitely — save data and achievements stay tied to your profile, not the install.
- Periodically check Settings → System → Storage for large, rarely-played titles before assuming you need more storage hardware.
Common problems and fixes
- Game is grayed out and won't install
- Confirm you're signed in on your "home Xbox" and the account actually owns a license for that title — shared/family licenses only work fully offline on the designated home console.
- External drive isn't recognized or is too slow
- Use a USB 3.0-rated drive of at least 256GB; on Xbox Series X|S, only games installed on the internal drive or an official Storage Expansion Card get full next-gen load-time performance — external USB drives run older-gen games only.
Tips and tricks
- Sort your library by "Size" in the Storage menu to quickly spot the biggest space hogs instead of guessing which games to uninstall.
Frequently asked questions
Will uninstalling a game delete my save data?
No — saves sync to the cloud (or can be backed up) independently of the install, so reinstalling the game restores your progress as long as you're signed in to the same account.
