Sign in with your Microsoft account and manage Xbox Live connectivity
Every Xbox profile is tied to a Microsoft account, and staying signed in to that account is what unlocks Xbox Live features — multiplayer, cloud saves, achievements, and access to purchased games and Game Pass. Multiple people can add their own accounts to the same console without losing their individual saves, settings, or friends lists.
How to open Account Sign-In & Xbox Live
- Go to Profile & system → Settings → Account → Sign-in, security & passkey.
- Choose the profile that should sign in automatically on startup.
- Toggle "Sign me in automatically" on for that profile and off for others sharing the console.
What you should know
- Press the Xbox button, go to Profile & system → Add or switch, then choose "Add new" and sign in with a Microsoft account email and password.
- Enable "Sign me in automatically" so this profile signs in whenever the console powers on, without re-entering a password.
- To switch between already-added profiles, press the Xbox button, select your gamerpic, then choose the other profile — no re-entry needed if auto sign-in isn't blocking it.
- Manage password, security info, and two-step verification for the account at account.microsoft.com/security, not on the console itself.
Why it matters
Without a signed-in Microsoft account, the console can't verify game licenses, sync cloud saves, or connect to Xbox Live — meaning no multiplayer, no achievements tracking, and in many cases no access to digitally purchased games at all.
Best practices
- Turn on two-step verification through the Microsoft Authenticator app — it stops most unauthorized sign-in attempts without adding real friction to daily use.
- Set your primary profile to auto sign-in on your main console, but leave guest or shared-household profiles on manual sign-in.
- Sign out fully (Profile & system → your gamerpic → Sign out) before letting someone borrow the console, especially if payment methods are saved.
Common problems and fixes
- Console is stuck on "Signing in…"
- Check status.xbox.com for a live Xbox Live outage first, then verify your network connection under Settings → General → Network settings — most sign-in stalls are network or service related, not account corruption.
- Two-step verification code never arrives
- Use the Microsoft Authenticator app instead of SMS if texts are delayed, and double-check the phone number or recovery email on file at account.microsoft.com hasn't expired or changed.
Tips and tricks
- You can add several local profiles to one console, but only Xbox Game Pass and purchased-game licenses tied to the console's designated "home Xbox" are shareable across those profiles when offline.
Frequently asked questions
Do I still need Xbox Live Gold to play online?
Xbox Live Gold was replaced by Xbox Game Pass Core and Ultimate — you need one of those (or a Game Pass tier that includes online multiplayer) to play most paid multiplayer games; free-to-play titles don't require it.

- Privacy & Family SettingsXbox family controls are managed through a Microsoft family group (at account.microsoft.com/family or the Xbox Family Settings mobile app), covering age-based content filters, daily screen time limits, spending permissions, and who a child account can communicate with — with a quick-access subset also available directly on the console.
- Game Library & InstallsYour full digital library — everything you own, including games you haven't installed — lives under My games & apps, while Settings → System → Storage shows what's actually taking up space and lets you move titles between the internal drive, an external USB drive, or a Seagate Storage Expansion Card.
